Valletta Green Festival

Friday May 7th to Tuesday May 11th 2021

event location

Valletta

Friday 7th May – Tuesday 11th May, 10:00am – 6:00pm

The 2021 edition of the annual Valletta Green Festival will not only feature its traditional location, St George’s Square, but also other squares and spaces across Valletta, as the Valletta Cultural Agency will be greening up the city with various small trees, shrubs and other environmental installations.

A temporary Garden Installation will be erected in front of the Parliament building by The Garland Company. Inspired by the formal gardens of the past, the City Gate Garden installation bears a classical layout that blends beautifully with Valletta’s elegant architecture. Placed squarely in one of the most prominent spaces in the City, this installation is an invitation to reflect on the importance of urban greening. It has been constructed using salvaged wood, a testament that abandoned materials may too be infused with a new life and purpose.

This year’s infiorata in St George’s Square, designed by local artist Zack Ritchie, features a colourful turtle inspired by this year’s European Green Week theme, ‘Zero Pollution’. ERA (Environmental and Resources Authority) will be reproducing a beehive made with a marine wood structure in St George’s Square, next to the infiorata. The aim of the installation is to stress the importance of pollination for biodiversity and how pollution impacts this process. There will be different messages affixed onto the wooden installation.

As part of the VCA’s collaboration with the Ministry for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development, there will also be ‘Water be the Change’ and PARKS information points in St George’s Square, for visitors who might have any questions on how to better reduce unnecessary water consumption, reduce pollution and save the environment. The Water Services Corporation, which also falls under the umbrella of the Ministry for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development, will also be present in St George’s Square with a water truck, from which passersby may collect free drinking water into their reusable bottles.

The aim of the Water Be The Change project is to promote water conservation and to raise awareness on water consumption, in order to make it more efficient and reduce any waste. Water Be the Change is a national water conservation campaign launched in September 2019, with the aim of delivering an effective educational and awareness-raising campaign on the optimized and efficient use of water resources to facilitate a cultural a shift in people’s behaviour toward water conservation on the Maltese Islands. The campaign is running for three years, targeting the domestic, commercial and agricultural sectors. This project is part-funded by the European Union and implemented in by the Energy and Water Agency – a Government Agency established within the Ministry for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development.

This year’s edition of the Kite Festival, a collaboration between the Valletta Cultural Agency, the China Cultural Centre and the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, will be held on the 8th of May at 10AM, via ZOOM. This year’s event will take place in the form of an online workshop, with people, in particularly children, being invited to participate as Kite Master Mr Guo Hongli will share his tips, tricks and kite-making techniques on how to build the perfect kite. H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, on behalf of the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, will be delivering a speech on the occasion. Participants are invited to prepare the materials required beforehand (which may be found on the FB event page) to be able to follow along.
